Klis Fortress Might Be the Most Underrated Stop in Croatia

Why Klis is actually so cool

This is not just a pretty ruin.

Klis was one of the most strategically important fortresses in Croatia because it controlled the mountain pass between inland Dalmatia and the coast. For centuries, whoever controlled Klis controlled a major route toward Split.

It was used by Croatian rulers as early as the Middle Ages and later became one of the key defensive strongholds against Ottoman expansion. The Ottomans captured it in 1537, and Venetian forces took it in 1648.

Once you are actually walking through it, that history makes a lot more sense. The fortress runs along the ridge instead of being one single compact castle, so you keep walking through gates, walls, towers, courtyards, and little stone buildings while the landscape opens up around you.

It feels much bigger than it looks from the road.

You can actually explore it

This was probably my favorite part.

Klis does not feel like one of those historic sites where you walk through a roped-off route, stare at a few signs, and leave 20 minutes later.

You can really wander.

We went through old stone rooms, climbed along the walls, looked through windows over the valley, and kept finding new sections. There is the Oprah Tower, the old Uskok armory, the governor’s residence, and the Church of St. Vitus inside the fortress complex.

We thought we would stay maybe 45 minutes.

We stayed around two hours.

The Game of Thrones connection

If you watched Game of Thrones, you may recognize Klis.

The fortress was used as part of Meereen, the city Daenerys conquers. It became much more internationally known after appearing in the series.

The funny thing is that even if you do not care about Game of Thrones at all, I would still go.

The GOT connection is cool, but it is not the reason the place is worth visiting.

Go for sunset if you can

This is what really sold me.

The fortress sits high above Split, so as the sun starts dropping, you get this huge panoramic view over the city, coastline, mountains, and islands.

The sunset from here was genuinely one of the best we had in Croatia.

The photos barely do it justice because the whole landscape changes as the light drops. The stone walls turn warmer, the mountains get darker, and then the coast starts lighting up below.

If you have a choice between visiting in the middle of the day or later in the afternoon, I would absolutely choose later.

Just make sure you check the current closing time and the day’s sunset before planning around it. Leave enough time to explore before the fortress closes.

One thing to know: parking is limited

This is the annoying part.

There is parking near the fortress, but it is not huge, and the streets around Klis can feel tight. If you are going close to sunset or during peak season, I would give yourself extra time to find a spot.

We managed, but it is not somewhere I would arrive five minutes before sunset expecting everything to be easy.

How long do you need?

I would give yourself at least 1.5 to 2 hours.

You could technically walk through faster, but that would kind of defeat the point. A lot of the fun is just exploring the different levels and stopping for the views.

We spent about two hours there and never felt bored.

Is Klis Fortress worth it?

Yes. Especially if you are staying in or near Split.

I think Klis gets overshadowed by places like Dubrovnik, Diocletian’s Palace, and the beaches, but it was one of the places that felt the most atmospheric to me.

You get history, views, ruins you can actually explore, a Game of Thrones filming location, and one of the best sunsets around Split.

And it never felt overly polished or touristy.

We went in not even sure it was worth the stop.

We left wondering why more people do not talk about it.
