Blizzard Beach vs. Typhoon Lagoon: Which Fits Your Day?
My local take: Blizzard Beach for slides, Typhoon Lagoon for a relaxed family day. Compare the parks and find your fit with a quick quiz.
Updated
Find my water park ↗I grew up around Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, and I would choose them for different days. Blizzard Beach is my pick for teens, adults and older kids who want a day of water slides. Typhoon Lagoon is where I would send a family looking for a more relaxed day.
Typhoon Lagoon is awesome. The wave pool is so much fun, and you have the lazy river when you want to slow down. Blizzard Beach wins me over with its slides, especially Summit Plummet at the top of Mount Gushmore. You can take the chairlift up the mountain, which is a pretty fun way to get around a water park.
So my first question would be: are you going for the slides, or do you want a more relaxed day with the wave pool and lazy river? That matters more than declaring one park the winner for everybody.
Planning note, checked September 30, 2026: Disney currently lists Typhoon Lagoon as temporarily closed for refurbishment. Blizzard Beach is listed as open today. This comparison describes the parks' offerings; check the official calendar for the date you want to visit before buying admission. Typhoon Lagoon status, Blizzard Beach calendar.
Start with the part you would be disappointed to miss
| Your priority | Start by considering | What makes the difference |
|---|---|---|
| Teens, adults or older kids excited about water slides | Blizzard Beach | This is my pick for that group because I think the slides make it more fun. |
| A more relaxed family day | Typhoon Lagoon | This is the overall atmosphere I prefer for that kind of visit. It does not mean every attraction is gentle. |
| A wave pool that is a major attraction itself | Typhoon Lagoon | Its Surf Pool has waves reaching six feet. |
| A steep body-slide challenge | Blizzard Beach | Summit Plummet has a near-vertical descent and a 48-inch minimum height. |
| A gentler wave-pool atmosphere | Blizzard Beach | Disney describes Melt-Away Bay as having soothing waves. It remains a swimming environment, not a guarantee of suitability for every swimmer. |
| Tropical surroundings | Typhoon Lagoon | Its theme is a tropical setting after a storm. |
| Snow-and-ski-resort theming in Florida | Blizzard Beach | Its setting is a melting ski resort. |
| A lazy river and time together | Either | Both have a lazy river and shared rafting attractions; choose around the rest of the group's priorities. |
These are recommendations based on the attractions, not a claim that one park wins every category. Surf Pool, Summit Plummet, Melt-Away Bay.
The wave pools are different reasons to go
The wave pool is a big part of why I think Typhoon Lagoon is so much fun. I would give it real time in the day, rather than treating it as a quick stop between slides. Then there is the lazy river when you want a change of pace.
Calling Typhoon Lagoon more relaxing overall does not mean its wave pool is mild. Disney lists six-foot swells, asks guests to check the day's wave schedule at the pool and does not permit inner tubes there. If the person choosing the park imagines floating around while somebody else imagines playing in big waves, settle that difference before choosing.
Blizzard Beach's Melt-Away Bay is the option to look at for a gentler wave-pool experience. That does not mean the whole park is gentle. It means you can prefer this pool without sharing somebody else's enthusiasm for Summit Plummet.
For children and less-confident swimmers, check the pool rules and take the conditions seriously. A park recommendation is not a swimming-ability assessment. Typhoon Lagoon's pool guidance.
Choose slides you want to ride
The water slides are why I would choose Blizzard Beach for teens, adults and older kids. Summit Plummet is the one at the very top that especially stands out to me. If your group wants the slides to be the main event, this is where I would start.
Disney calls the ride up Mount Gushmore a chairlift. It gives access to the area for Summit Plummet, Slush Gusher and Teamboat Springs; it does not eliminate the additional stairs to Summit Plummet. The slide itself has a 48-inch minimum height. Official chairlift description, planDisney's access explanation.
If a big drop sounds like something you would spend the afternoon avoiding, it should not decide the park for you. My recommendation is about the kind of day the group wants, not an age rule: an adult who wants to relax may be happier at Typhoon Lagoon, and a family excited about slides may prefer Blizzard Beach.
At Typhoon Lagoon, Miss Adventure Falls is a shared raft attraction to compare; Blizzard Beach has Teamboat Springs. Both parks offer ways to ride together, so neither automatically wins because you are coming with friends or family. Compare the attractions the group will actually use. Blizzard Beach attractions, Typhoon Lagoon attractions.
Let the quieter parts of the day count too
Typhoon Lagoon's tropical theme and Blizzard Beach's melting-ski-resort setting give the parks different personalities. If you are interested in the surroundings as much as the rides, that is a reasonable part of the choice.
Both have lazy rivers: Castaway Creek at Typhoon Lagoon and Cross Country Creek at Blizzard Beach. If your plan is mostly to float and take breaks, a recommendation based entirely on the biggest slide will miss what you wanted from the day.
Before you make it the plan
Check which park is operating on your date, whether your must-do attractions are available and what your particular admission covers. A theme-park ticket should not be assumed to include water-park entry. Weather and temporary closures can also affect the day; the calendar is a starting point, not a promise that every attraction will operate throughout your visit.
My recommendation is Blizzard Beach for a group excited about the slides, especially teens, adults and older kids. For a more relaxed family day, I would choose Typhoon Lagoon when it is operating. Its wave pool is a reason to go in its own right, and the lazy river gives you somewhere to slow down afterward.
If the group is split, take the quiz together. Choose the day most of you actually want to have, then check that the park is available for it.
